Book Project "After the Squall" Images of the North Woods and Lake Superior

Herbster Sunset. One early evening on a late September night, I was traveling to the Apostle Islands for a week of kayaking. As I drove along, I spotted this scene in the town of Herbster. It was was quite a sunset. Photographed with a Nikon N8008s film camera and Kodak Kadacrome 64 slide film.

Moonrise over Lake Superior. This image was taken by Seagull Island near the town of Knife River in the early evening at dusk. I love the color of the sky. NikonN90s film camera Fuji 200 color negative film.

I photographed this lovely image of frost covered juniper leaves one morning in mid-September while camping near the Onion River. Photographed with a Nikon N90s film camera and Fuji 400 color negative film.

Brule Lake Star Trails and Northern lights. I photographed this amazing image one night a few years ago on the shore of Brule Lake in the BWCA. This is a four and a half hour exposure, believe it or not! It was taken with a Mamiya universal film camera. I set the camera on a tripod and tripped the shutter with a cable release and went and laid down in my car. I woke up four hours later and tripped the shutter as dusk started to show on the horizon, and went back to bed. Photographed with Fuji 100 speed negative film.

Foreword As I have spent many a day selling my art photography at numerous art fairs, festivals and shows. I have often wished during these countless events that I could show more of my work than what a typical art fair booth or gallery will hold. I have many more excellent images of the North than could ever fit in a typical gallery or art fair booth, and I have always had the desire to show my work outside of the limited market of air fairs and galleries. These desires drove the creation of my first photo book "After the Squall". I must give much thanks to all the assistance and help I received from my Publisher X Publishing House and my parents and Family. They made production of this book a dream come true. -Michael Maltese Photo Caption- Nine Mile Sun Burst #2. This fantastic scene was taken on Nine Mile Lake after a severe thunder storm blew through.This image along with Nine Mile Burst #2 were taken within a half hour of each other. During the period after this storm I was able to photograph a number of other beautiful scenes including Loons and Fall Color. Photographed with a Nikon N90s film camera and Fuji provia slide film.

Fireweeds and Brown-eyed Susans.This photograph was taken in a State Park on the North Shore of Lake Superior. I love the combination of the pink of the Fireweed and the yellow of the Brown-eyed Susans. Prints available of this website or by contacting michael Maltese @ michael_m_55409@yahoo.com

Shovelhead Sunrise. This photograph was taken back in the early 90's in Tettegouche State Park. At the time the park was mostly undeveloped, only some trails and no campground. This was my first really great sunset as I had only been shooting about 4 years at the time. I spent a week getting up at 5:30 and going to this spot. On the last day I got this shot. Lupines in Pink and Blue.

Baptism Mist. I came across this scene as I was driving down County Highway 7 near Finland after a very wet day fishing along the Baptism River. Shortly after I photographed this scene, the sun broke through the clouds and this scene disappeared. Photographed with a Nikon N8008s film camera and Fuji slide film.

Bunchberrys and Moss.

Upper Falls of the Brule River in Judge C Magney State Park. The photograph was taken in early June when the river was high. Bronica ETRS film camera. Photography copyrighted 2009.

Oak Island Sunset. This image was taken in 2003 while on a extended kayak trip to Apostle Islands National Seashore. This amazing sunset happen after a severe thunderstorm earlier in the day. Nikon N8008 film camera Kodak Kodacrome 64 film.

Lutsen Bridge over the Poplar River by Lutsen Resort. This image was taken during the peak of fall colors in 2007. Nikon N90s film camera, Provia film.

Lone Pink Ladyslipper and Bunchberries. Taken this spring in Cascade River State Park. I was lucky to be there in early June as the ladyslippers and bunchberries were blooming at the same time. Photos available for purchase from this website or from me directly. - Michael Maltese
